Studio 1700
Palau Sator, Baix Empordà
2017
The new Nordest Arquitectura studio is installed in an old barn in Palau-Sator, a medieval village in the province of Girona. Located in front of the town wall, as a backdrop to the Plaça de la Font, the building has been part of the site’s memory since the 19th century. Formerly linked to agricultural activity, it had served as a warehouse and stable before a renovation that altered its character. Our intervention arises from the desire to listen to the building and recover its essence, transforming it into a studio without erasing its history.
The project respects the original stone and engages with it through new, lightweight, and honest materials, delicately layered. On the ground floor, the public spaces open toward the square, making the interior a natural continuation of the exterior. On the first floor, a single open-plan space brings the team together around a large shared table. The contrast between old and new is resolved through joints and voids that highlight the building’s original character and give it new life.
